Accumulated Stress

Have you ever had the experience where a small thing goes wrong and it nearly pushes you over the edge?

I heard a story once where a man's shoe lace snapped and he went berserk. Obviously, it wasn't the importance of a ten cent shoelace that pushed the man past his breaking point - then what was it? It was the PRESSURE OF ACCUMULATED STRESS!

I have seen thousands of patients in the last twenty years where the real cause of their problems was accumulated stress disguised as many things, such as: Headaches, Depression, Persistent Tiredness or Hormone Irregularities.

Accumulated Stress produces dangerous levels of a hormone called ADRENALIN. Adrenalin drives us forward and it makes it difficult for us to slow down, rather like a train driver applying the brakes when he sees a STOP sign but the weight of the load behind him pushes him forward until a CRASH OCCURS.

  1. Too much adrenalin can cause narrowing of capillaries that can reduce blood supply to your heart.
  2. Too much adrenalin can reduce your body's ability to remove cholesterol.
  3. Too much adrenalin can increase the risk of clots forming in your bloodstream - a major contributor to stroke.
  4. Too much adrenalin can increase your susceptibility to plaque forming on the walls of your arteries.

I have known people who have had a near perfect diet and exercised regularly but have had just one heart attack and died instantly. These people were all very stressed, and I strongly suspect that over the years high adrenalin output would have laid down too much plaque in their arteries, so at that all important moment when maximum blood flow was required to the heart it just wasn't there!

Hard wired into your brain is a sentinel of alarm called your Hypothalamus. When it detects a stressor it sends a chemical message to a part of your brain called your Pituitary Gland. In turn, your Pituitary sends a message to your Thyroid. This message is TSH ( Thyroid Stimulating Hormone ) . In response to this message your Thyroid makes something called Thyroxin which is ultimately broken down into something called Triiodothyronine. Triiodothyronine is very important because it plays a fundamental role in Liver Metabolism. The problem is when you become stressed for a long period of time, the uptake of the messages from your Pituitary to your Thyroid can become confused and your Thyroid may begin to perform in an unpredictable fashion. This is not always able to be accurately tracked by a blood test. If your Thyroid Gland is under-functioning you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  1. Unrelenting Tiredness
  2. Cold Extremities
  3. Weight Gain
  4. Constipation
  5. Brittle or Lifeless Hair or Hair Loss
  6. Low Sex Drive

If your Thyroid is Over-Active you may experience:

  1. An inability to sit still.
  2. Weight Loss
  3. Irregular Heart Beat
  4. Eye Problems

It is obvious that Accumulated Stress can be a serious problem. Through the pressures of 21st Century Living, many of us have become HUMAN DOINGS rather than HUMAN BEINGS.

I have developed TWO ANSWERS TO ACCUMULATED STRESS! One is a technique that I show my patients that really only takes fifteen minutes a day to practise. I call it BEING STILL. Because I am a Herbalist as well as a Naturopath, the other thing I do is to create individual herbal mixtures that help bring the person back into equilibrium.

The following is an excerpt from a letter a patient sent me this week:

As an endurance athlete, I'm after every advantage I can get. I follow the principles in Stephen's book 100% Alive & Happy because it gives me an exceptional feeling of Health and Vitality. You can't train if you're sick and you can't compete at your best if you're stressed. By following the programme Stephen has created for me, I have astounding all round consistency. Stephen has taught me his BE STILL technique that relieves the stress in my life and gives me an inner calm and feeling of control. BEING STILL before a race gives me maximum focus for the task ahead and a real chance to prepare for battle. The herbal treatment that I receive from Stephen gives me access to energy that I can only describe as incredible. It allows me to compete in the 24 hour Mountain Bike Races in a far superior way than I have ever been capable of before. With his herbal medicine and other non-drug treatments, Stephen is able to calculate when my energy will peak so that this coincides with my races and enhances my performances. What more could I ask for?

Best Regards,

Michael Walsh
